A big honor for Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh. She has been named on Essence magazine's list of 'Woke 100 Women'.
The magazine says the women chosen "continuously fight the good fight by inspiring us and igniting movements - from the healthcare field to the Hill and Hollywood."
The list also includes #MeToo movement founder Tarana Burke, "Black Panther" costume designer Ruth Carter, and actress Kerry Washington.
Pugh told Essence that her definition of 'woke' is "to be focused, to be attentive, to recognize your purpose. What matters is that we create a society that is more equal and more just.”
Besides Pugh, four other mayors from Maryland also made the list:
- Sadra Barrow, the mayor of Colmar Manor
- Tracy Farrish Gant, mayor of Edmonston
- Takisha D. James, mayor of Bladensburg
- Petrella Robinson, mayor of North Brentwood
Barrow told Essence "I want people to see me with my trials and tribulations and things that I’ve gone through to be able to still stand up and be a mayor. So people who look like me and girls who look like me will know that they can do the same thing.”
