PIKESVILLE, Md. — A Baltimore County Police officer is hospitalized after being shot in the line of duty on Sunday morning.

Officer, gunman wounded in shootout along Milford Mill Road
It happened around 8:50am when police were called to a trail along the 900 block of Milford Mill Road for a suspicious person exposing themselves.
As officers arrived at the scene, they came under gunfire.
One officer was struck, as was the alleged gunman after police shot back.
During the shootout a bystander was also hit.
Police say the wounded officer is talking and alert, but remains in critical condition at University of Maryland Shock Trauma.
Chief Robert McCullough said the incident is a reminder of the safety risks officers face each day.
“This case highlights how dangerous policing is in America these days and it’s unpredictable, and it highlights the danger that our men and women of law enforcement face every day," McCullough said.
Councilman Izzy Patoka represents the area.
“I also live about half a mile down from Milford Mill Road from where this incident occurred. I’m a user of this park, and so this is just an attack on one of our law enforcement officers," said Patoka. "I’m just going to say this, it is absolutely unacceptable and the community will rally behind our police officers in the Pikesville precinct."
While the officer's name was not publicly revealed, they've been with the department for about a year-and-a-half.
The injured suspect is now in custody and recovering at the hospital.
