BEECH GROVE, Indiana — The Beech Grove High School senior class president was banned from his own graduation ceremony over his social media posts, according to the school.

School officials say some of Andrew Boyce’s recent posts on social media used language which was "threatening and profane."

Because of those posts, in which the school claims Boyce threatened to disrupt the commencement ceremony and used vulgar language like the f-word in describing his feelings toward the school, he was banned from graduation.

None of those posts involved threats of injuring anyone at the school.

Boyce’s parents say they don’t condone his choice of words but they think it’s “ridiculous” to think that he would pose a threat to his classmates or embarrass his family.

“It's upsetting and it feels not being able to walk is retaliatory based on our meeting when we asked they reconsider their decision,” said Andrew’s mother, Michelle.

The district’s superintendent issued a statement Friday saying “Attending the actual graduation exercise is considered a privilege” and that some students “cannot attend based on not meeting expectations.”

“To us it’s sad,” said his father, Neil. “It’s a life lesson that’s tough. I know he will get on with it. He’ll do great things.”

Boyce’s family says they are throwing him a party on Saturday instead and the speech he was going to give at commencement may end up online.
