Training for a Tri: 20 miles before the heat wave

With less than three weeks until the Columbia Iron Girl, I'm working to get more comfortable and confident on my bike.

I wanted to do a long ride this week before the heat wave takes over Baltimore. I took a gorgeous 20-mile ride around the Loch Raven Reservoir Thursday. I had never been on Loch Raven Drive near the dam. The view was so great, I caught myself just admiring the water, and not quite concentrating on my best times.

For a large part of the ride, I was traveling on Manor Road. I started at Glen Arm Road and turned off on Dulaney Valley Road. Wow, is that stretch of road hilly. I was not prepared for a long, steep, winding hill. I had to get off the bike and rest for a few minutes in the middle of that one, but it was a great workout.

My legs feel pretty good and I'm getting excited. I finished the 20-mile loop in an hour and 40 minutes. I think I can definitely improve that time, especially since that factors in my 10 minutes rest.

Friday I will be taking a spin class with my favorite instructor, Bonnie. Then I'm going to run a 3-mile loop around the gym.

I'm aiming to run the Iron Girl 5K course Sunday or Monday, so I can become familiar with it.
