In a resignation letter released Wednesday afternoon, O'Connor said, " I have done my best for the children of Howard County. I feel that is now an appropriate time for me to conclude my work on behalf of our families, students and community."
O' Connor has served on the school board since 2014 and was acting chairman at one point. She voted to renew Dr. Foose's four-year contract in February 2016.
According to protocol, the Board of Education will contact Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman, who will appoint a new member.
The Howard County Council will approve County Executive Kittleman's appointment and that person will serve out O'Connor's term, which ends in 2018.
