HOWARD COUNTY, Md. — A fatal collision leaves one juvenile dead after an attempted traffic stop in Columbia, Saturday morning.
An officer in an unmarked Howard County Police Department vehicle attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2010 Honda Accord on Route 32 in the area of Broken Land Parkway.
Police say the car fled from the attempted traffic stop and immediately crashed on the eastbound ramp to Broken Land, where it overturned.
Soon after it was overturned, it caught fire.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was confirmed to be a juvenile who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
The IID will generally release the name of the decedent and any involved officers within two business days of the incident, although that period may be extended, if necessary, pursuant to IID protocol.
The IID will generally release body-worn camera footage within 20 business days of an incident.
There may be situations where more than 20 days are necessary, including when investigators require additional time to complete witness interviews, when technical delays occur due to the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or when it is necessary to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.
