HARFORD COUNTY, Md. — Harford County Public Schools experienced a major leadership shake-up this week.

Dr. Dyann Mack has been appointed interim superintendent of Harford County Public Schools, effective January 8.

Dr. Mack brings nearly 30 years of experience in HCPS and most recently served as deputy superintendent for academics.

Her career in HCPS began as a classroom teacher at Prospect Mill Elementary School, followed by roles as achievement gap coordinator, assistant principal and principal.

“I am honored to serve as interim superintendent of Harford County Public Schools,” said Dr. Mack. “I look forward to working alongside our students, staff, families, and community to foster safe, and highquality learning environments where every student and staff member can be seen, valued and heard."

The appointment comes after Superintendent Sean Bulson was placed on administrative leave.

Bulson was reportedly robbed inside a New Orleans hotel room in 2024 while attending a work conference.

The incident, which resulted in the potential loss of school property, recently resurfaced and gained attention on social media.

"The attention and distraction surrounding this reported incident has created challenges for the school system at a time when our focus must remain squarely on students, staff, and the uninterrupted operation of our schools," said Aaron Poynton, president of Harford County's Board of Education, following Wednesday night's board decision.

Poynton also resigned from his role.

According to his message, he insisted his departure has nothing to do with current controversies facing the board.

Poynton said he accepted "a chief executive officer role" with a "new employer," starting next week.
