NOTTINGHAM, Md. — Water bubbling up from Belair Road at Dunfield Road flooded the surface, forcing the roads closure and leaving motorists scrambling to get where they were going.

“When I tried to get back home, there was a no go, like all the way up to Belair and Dunfield I could not go,” said Sheena Molineaux, “so I drove up to Belair and around the Silver Spring area. That was an issue so I had to cutting all the way around the back just to get home.”

The problems stemmed from a water main break, a fractured 24-inch pipe, that would be no simple fix.

As much of the water from the water main break came spilling downhill into the Stillmeadow townhouse complex, many of the people living here say this is the second time they’ve been victimized within the last 48 hours.

Work to repair a break in a 10-inch line prompted the city to cut off the water to the neighborhood on Wednesday.

“So I filled up containers,” longtime resident Vicki Hardin told us, “Well, I didn’t need them so I emptied them out so we have water today.Right now we do.”

It’s enough to test the patience of residents whose lives are impacted by the unexpected service and travel interruptions.

“We’re dealing with it the best we can, but a hardship is a hardship,” said Carlos Shephard, “We can’t turn our water on.We can’t get into our neighborhood the right way.”

Even impacting the crew, which is trying to wrap up work on the first pipe only to find out an even larger one has failed.
“I show up here. The two guys I’m working with already saw it,” said Bernard Wolford of Knott Mechanical, “They showed it to me.It was crazy how much water was coming down. You could see all the rocks laying there in the road. The storm drains weren’t even taking the water down, because it was that much.”

No word yet on how long it will take to repair the broken main on Belair Road, but motorists should look for detours in that area.
