A skateboarder who was struck by a Baltimore County Police car in the early morning hours of Jan. 17 has died from his injuries, the police department announced Friday.

Police identified the man as 31-year-old Brandon Michael Williams of the 2600 block of West Park Drive in Woodlawn.

Williams was struck on Whitehead Road, near Whitestone Road in Gwynn Oak, by an officer who was en route to a service call at about 3:50 a.m. Police said Williams was heading north on his skateboard but in the southbound lane of Whitehead Road. He was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The officer involved in the crash was unhurt.

A Baltimore County Police Crash Investigation Team is still investigating the incident. Baltimore County Police Public Information Officer Jennifer Peach said the officer involved is not currently suspended.

“The crash investigation team will consider things like, 'What was the kind of call he was responding to? Were his lights and siren activated? Was it appropriate for them to be activated based on the type of call he was responding to?'” Peach told WMAR's Jeff Hager Thursday. “They'll look into the speed of the vehicle, the position of the pedestrian, the type of roadway... 'Was it a hilled area or a straightaway? What was the sight distance?' All those factors will be considered when determining whether or not the officer is actually at fault.”
