A man is in critical condition at Shock Trauma after a five car crash on I-695 Thursday night.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. just prior to the Charles Street exit and blocked all lanes of travel. Witnesses said the driver of a 2016 Kia Forte was speeding and weaving between in and out of traffic. That car started a chain reaction crash involving five other cars and sending five people to the hospital.

State Police say the driver of the Forte is a 23-year-old man from Westminster. He was taken to Shock Trauma with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers at the scene noticed the man smelled of alcohol and several empty alcoholic beverage containers were found in the car. Investigators are awaiting the results of a blood kit. Members of the Westminster Barrack were requested to help notify the man's family of his condition.

Troopers closed all lanes of the beltway to do a collision reconstruction.
