Bridge work on westbound I-70 closes lanes; MDOT SHA recommends using westbound US-40 instead

Posted

Drivers heading west over the Patapsco River may want to use US 40 rather than I-70 as roadwork affects traffic on the interstate, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration advised Friday.

Two right lanes of the westbound I-70 bridge at the Baltimore/Howard County line closed late Thursday and may remain out of service into the weekend as crews perform emergency bridge repairs. The lane closures leave just one lane open to traffic over the span.

To accommodate for more potential traffic, traffic signals on US 40 have been re-timed. Drivers can take westbound US 40 to northbound US 29 (Columbia Pike), back to westbound I-70 to avoid the construction area. Taking westbound MD 26 to MD 32 back to westbound I-70 is another option.
