Two lanes were shut down early Wednesday morning as a Baltimore City worker attempted to make the intersection of Northern Parkway and Springlake Way safer.

Up above him, a snow-covered tree leaned heavily on the traffic signal, straining the line, and bowing the light posts holding up the lights. The down tree was first spotted around 4:30 a.m.

Westbound, the far right lane and eastbound the left lane were shut down, with three street closure signs set up warning drivers.

The danger became to great for the worker to stay, after a half dozen vehicles plowed the eastbound closure signs into splinters.

A Baltimore City Police Officer arrived around 6 a.m. and placed flares in front of the remaining street closure sign westbound, closest to the trunk of the tree, slowing traffic.

Forestry and BGE were called to clear the tree and make the area safe. They had not arrived when our crew left around 7 a.m.
