DeRay Mckesson is leaving his position as interim Chief of Staff, according to Baltimore City Schools.
A schools spokesperson said McKesson had been, “doing the job while the district conducted a national search for a permanent Chief of HC. DeRay will be with us until the new person comes on board.”

The former mayoral candidate and activist joined the school system last year, serving as the interim chief human capital officer as part of CEO Dr. Sonja B. Santelises’ transition team.
Mckesson took to Twitter Monday morning confirming the announcement, saying he intends to leave his position this month. “It's been an incredible year,” he said.
“I've led a team of approx. 50 staff with a district of 11,000 employees & > 175 schools. Kids deserve great teachers. Staff deserve support.
The current school system CEO is incredible. I wanted to support her first year. Now is time for me to devote more time to organizing.
I love Bmore. & I know they transformative change will only occur when we are as organized on the inside as the outside. Lead everywhere.”

Mckesson previously served in Baltimore City Public Schools as a human capital specialist from August 2011 to February 2012, then as special assistant to the chief human capital officer until December 2013.

He held a similar position in Minneapolis Public Schools.
Mckesson ran in the Democratic primary for Baltimore mayor.
