Police in Maryland are identifying the man they say was fatally shot by an officer after he fired at police from the balcony of a third-floor apartment.

Greenbelt Police identified the man in a news release Tuesday as 28-year-old Rico Don Rae Johnson of Greenbelt.

Police spokesman George Mathews says officers were called to an apartment complex Monday for a report of a person firing a gun. When officers arrived, Mathews says the man went to a third-floor apartment and fired at them from a balcony. He says an officer fired, striking the man, who continued firing intermittently. A tactical unit took Johnson into custody and he later died at a hospital.

Mathews says Johnson was black. He didn't know whether the department would release the officer's name or race.
