A 23-year-old Hagerstown man has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse of an eight-week-old infant.

On Aug. 12, child protective services responded to Meritus Medical Center for a report of an injured child.

The infant was brought to the hospital by its mother after hearing reports of abuse by Nicholas James Hammersla, the child’s father.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the infant was flown to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Doctor’s reported the child suffered from bruising on the leg, hemorrhaging on the brain, as well as elevated enzyme levels in the liver and multiple rib fractures.

Hammersla was arrested after speaking with Washington County detectives on Aug. 13.

Hammersla has been released on a $50,000 bond.
