Man, woman ID'd in Bay Bridge Airport crash

A man and a woman killed in a plane crash at the Bay Bridge Airport in Queen Anne's County Tuesday afternoon have been identified.

Maryland State Police said Richard Hess, 63, of Ellicott City, MD., and Janet Metz, 56, of Ellicott City, MD died after their plane crashed into a field across from the airport located near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Hess was the pilot and Metz was the passenger, according to police. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The plane went down just before 1:00 p.m. in an open field near the Ellendale Manor community in Stevensville and burst into flames. Federal authorities at the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are handling the investigation.

The plane was associated with Chesapeake Sport Pilot, a flight school based at the airport. 

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
