Attorney General Frosh wants settlement reform

Posted

A new bill aims to help people who win settlements take more of that money home.

Settlement companies offer you a one time settlement that is often just pennies on the dollars.

Freddie Gray, the man whose police custody death last spring sparked days of riots, received a lead paint settlement of more than $140,000.

After a settlement company became involved, Gray only received a total payment of about $18,000.

Attorney General Brian Frosh wants these transactions to be monitored more closely.

Frosh said in 171 settlements victims were awarded $21 million, yet they only received $6 million after settlement companies became involved.
