The Humane Society of the United States is making sure animals are out of harms way during Hurricane Matthew.
The organization evacuated 57 animals from the Charleston Animal Society in South Carolina in response to an evacuation order from state officials. The animals arrived at the Humane Society's headquarters in Gaithersburg Thursday.
The animals were awaiting adoptions in South Carolina, but will now be available for adoptions from shelters in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and Washington, D.C.
The following organizations are housing the dogs: SPCA of Anne Arundel County of Annapolis, Tri-County Animal Shelter of Hughesville, Humane Society of Washington County of Hagerstown, Washington Animal Rescue League-Washington Humane Society of Washington, D.C., Animal Care Sanctuary of East Smithfield, Pa. and Mohawk Hudson Humane Society of Menands, N.Y.
