Construction worker dead after digging trench in Dundalk

DUNDALK, Md. — A construction worker has been pronounced dead after officials say he was hit by a piece of equipment while digging a trench.

The Baltimore County Fire Department rescued 36-year-old Transito Rodriguez Cruz from the 20 foot deep trench that was being dug at the City of Baltimore's Back River Wastewater Treatment plant.

Crews transported Cruz to Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital for treatment of his injuries when he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Officials say that the incident remains under investigation by both the Baltimore Environmental Police and the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
