BALTIMORE COUNTY — A mother was killed and her 3 year-old was injured in five car accident.
Police say the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday on Eastern Boulevard near White Marsh Boulevard when a Honda Element sideswiped another vehicle traveling in the same direction, then veered across the grass median, hitting the Toyota Corolla that the woman and child were traveling in head-on.
The Honda crashed into two additional vehicles before coming to a stop, causing minor injuries to those occupants.
Officials say the driver of the Toyota,Alexis Lashey Steele (23) of the 3900 block of Cutty Sark Road, was transported to Shock Trauma where she later died. Her 3-year-old son was also transported to a with non-life-threatening injuries.
Steele's mother said that her daughter had just started a new job and had moved into her own place.
Brittany Bachmann, one of Steele's friends was heartbroken when she heard what happened.
“This is a young woman that has her whole life ahead of her," Bachmann said. "Her son is only 3 he has a lot of growing up to do and now he has to do it without his mom. It’s very sad and emotional I’ve been trying to hold back my tears.”
The driver of the Honda suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
Officers are investigating to determine the factors involved in the crash, including determining if any drug or alcohol intoxication was involved.
