PIKESVILLE, Md. — A gas leak prompted an entire residential high rise building to evacuate for nearly two hours Monday evening.

Baltimore County Fire officials say they were called to the 3000 block of Stone Cliff Drive in the Quarry Lakes community after people began to smell the odor of gas.

Arriving fire crews immediately called for an evacuation and later found the leak in an attic space of the building.

Some people who live in the building told WMAR-2 News that they believe a lightning strike ruptured a gas line.

Fire officials, however, couldn't confirm if the building was struck by lightning, and haven't yet determined what caused the leak.

Gas in the building was turned off while fire and BGE crews worked to make the location safe to re-enter.

By 8:30 p.m., everyone was allowed to return to their homes.

No injuries were reported.
