DUNDALK, Md. — Charging documents provide more insight into what led to a shooting in Dundalk that left a 41-year-old man critically wounded on Friday.
Police initially reported that multiple people were detained following the shooting and have since announced the arrests of 24-year-old Jamel Southall and 56-year-old Darnell Willis.
At 3:30 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to the 3500 block of McShane Way after a 911 caller reported that a bald Black male with a beard had just shot somebody.
Police noted multiple bystanders in the road upon their arrival, and those bystanders directed officers toward the front yard of the residence.
The responding officer saw a man matching the description, later identified as Willis, and apprehended him.
According to charging documents, as Willis was being detained, Southall approached the officer and told him that he had shot his friend inside the home on McShane Way.
Southall was detained and transported to Baltimore County Police Headquarters for an interview. A female witness then exited the home and was also detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning.
Police later entered the home and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.
While treating the victim's wound, police asked who shot him, to which he responded, "a bald Black male with a beard."
According to charging documents, Southall told police during his interview that earlier in the day, around 1 p.m., he was meeting with his ex-girlfriend so she could help get his mother's prescription because he didn't have his ID.
Southall had placed his cellphone on the table inside the home on McShane Way and later noticed it was missing, which upset him and started an argument with his ex-girlfriend.
During the argument, Southall broke a window at the front of the house by the door and later left the home to walk to Hazelmere Avenue by himself.
At that point, Southall reportedly realized that $800 was missing from the crossbody bag that he had set down at the home, believing that his ex-girlfriend had stolen it.
Charging documents state that Southall met with two other people, at which point he explained that his belongings were stolen. One of the individuals replied that they should go get them back.
Southall explained that he just wanted his property back and that he wasn't going to hurt anyone. He added that he and the two other individuals got into a vehicle and returned to the home.
After arriving at the home, Southall began yelling at the residents inside, demanding his property back. He had a knife in his back pocket when someone, later identified as Willis, told him he was not allowed inside the house.
"Give me my s*** back," Southall said.
Southall then decided to climb through the window he had previously broken and unlock the front door for the other two individuals.
According to charging documents, as he was going up the stairs, Willis brandished a firearm and fired it, striking one of the individuals who came to the home with Southall.
Southall told police Willis was trying to shoot him, but he fled the scene. He later admitted to police that he had the knife in his hands at the time because Willis was shooting at him, but stated he never used it.
Police noted Willis also suffered a stab wound to his back and transported him to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment.
Willis is charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and other firearms violations.
Southall is charged with home invasion and burglary in the first and third degrees.
