Baltimore County Police will adorn their badges with mourning bands to honor a fallen officer who died more than 20 years ago, the department said Tuesday.

Officer Robert Zimmerman was struck and killed by two vehicles as he was crossing the street to conduct a business check on Edmondson Avenue on Nov. 5, 1986. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment but succumbed to his injuries nin days later.

County officers will don the bands Wednesday, the 22nd anniversary of Zimmerman's death.

Zimmerman was 46 years old. He had been with the county police department for 18 years and worked in the Western Traffic Unit, police said. He earned five departmental citations and was once named Officer of the Year by the Catonsville Optimist Club during his career.
