Police commissioner says safety is paramount at protests

Baltimore's police commissioner says safety is paramount for the city's police officers and protesters, and that police will work to protect protesters' First Amendment rights.

Commissioner Kevin Davis issued a statement Friday in response to the shootings in Dallas that killed five police officers and wounded seven others.

Davis says the crime in Dallas is not representative of the overwhelmingly peaceful protests that police frequently facilitate in Baltimore.

He says police in the city have worked to develop relationships with activists and protesters. Davis says police will work to protect protesters' rights, as they have throughout the past year.

The death of Freddie Gray last year after injuries he suffered in police custody prompted protests and rioting across the city.
