BALTIMORE — Maya Rockeymoore Cummings spoke out after her double mastectomy last week.

She is currently in the race for the 7th District seat in the United States House of Representatives previously held by her late husband Rep. Elijah Cummings.

Cummings died at age 68, on October 17 following complications from long term health challenges.

Rockeymoore Cummings said of the surgery, "Like many families, cancer hits close to home for me. My mother passed away from breast cancer and my sister was recently diagnosed. That’s why yesterday I underwent a preventative double mastectomy at Johns Hopkins Hospital. This surgery was planned months in advance, before I knew what God had in store for me over the past month. Your support has lifted my spirits and I am so grateful. Thank you so much to the doctors and nurses who performed the surgery and cared for me."
