BALTIMORE — Mary, the North American river otter at The Maryland Zoo, turned 20 on Thursday.

The zoo says she is the oldest female otter and the third oldest otter overall in the North American River Otter Species Survival Plan (SSP) of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

SSPs provide breeding recommendations to maximize genetic diversity, with the goal of ensuring the long-term survival of the population and the health of individual animals.

For her birthday, Mary received an ice "cake" with produce and fish.
