April marks Autism Awareness Month, and Baltimore kicked off the festivities with a parade at Light City on Sunday.

The Light It Up Blue Autism Parade and the Kennedy Krieger Institute partnered up to bring awareness to autism and life-altering developmental disorders that affect as many as 1 in 68 children in the country.

The event also featured inspirational speakers and a marching band.

One man, whose young son has autism, said at times his experience has been tremendously overwhelming. Once he found the Kennedy Krieger Institute, his son began improving.

"Initially at 3 years old, he wasn't talking -- now he's talking," James Winston said. "He understands Spanish as well as English. So he's talking proficiently."

The Baltimore City Hall dome was blue Sunday night in honor of World Autism Awareness Day.
