Christmas rain causes sewage overflow

Heavy rains on Christmas day caused a sewer overflow in East Baltimore, officials said.

Almost 17,000 gallons of sewage spilled out of a manhole in the 1700 block of East Chase Streetfor nearly 3 hours Friday evening.

Emergency signs were posted in the area and crews cleaned up debris from the overflow.

A statement from the Department of Public Works encourages residents to avoid contact with streams in the area to due to possible pollution.

The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department have been notified.
