Midshipmen Forney was on the Navy football team. Some of his teammates and members of his company, the 9th Company, lined the steps of the Naval Academy Chapel.

Forney lead a record setting offensive line this year, starting all 13 games. The Navy offense set a school record and led the nation in rushing, averaging 360.5 yards per game. Forney's family is from Frederick.

Two weeks before Forney's death, Midshipman 3rd Class Duke Carrillo died during the 1.5-mile run portion of a physical readiness test.
