ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WMAR) — Governor Larry Hogan on Monday appointed a new Democratic State Senator to represent Maryland's 44th Legislative District.

Delegate Charles E. Sydnor III has been chosen to replace Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, who held the seat since 2014.

Nathan-Pulliam stepped down on Decmebr 1, citing health issues.

A State Delegate since 2015, Sydnor is the current majority deputy whip.

He sits on the State House Judiciary Committee, and also chairs the sub-committee for Criminal Law and Procedures.

The 44th Legislative District covers parts of Baltimore City and County.
