HAVRE DE GRACE — Havre de Grace residents are outraged after police killed a bear on Saturday morning.
Officers say they headed to the 700 block of Union Avenue for a bear on residential property.
They were unable to locate the bear, who was last seen going toward the area of the hospital.
Police launched a search and alerted citizens in the area that a bear was sighted and to take appropriate actions.
Officers eventually found the animal in the area of the promenade and say they euthanized the bear due to the high potential for a physical encounter with humans.
"We understand this was a very unfortunate event, but officers made this decision based on the overwhelming concern for public safety.", said Havre de Grace Police Department.
Police say no further information will be released at this time.
Residents on Facebook say the 2-year-old bear should have been handled differently.
