Box truck drives through red light, runs into BMW & kills the driver in Baltimore County

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — Baltimore County Police are continuing to investigate a crash that happened at the intersection of Courtleigh Drive and Liberty Road Tuesday morning that left one driver dead.

Officers responded to the scene at 7:21 a.m. after a box truck traveling east on Liberty Road drove through a solid red light and struck the driver side of a 2011 BMW that had been traveling north on Courtleigh Drive.

The driver of the BMW, 57-year-old Anita Leach, of the 8500 block of Stevenswood Road, was transported to Northwest Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A passenger in the BMW was also transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the box truck, 28-year-old Ruben Eleazar Penado-Carranza, of the 600 block of Beacon Road, did not report any injuries and was arrested on scene.

Carranza, who was charged with felony and misdemeanor negligent vehicular manslaughter, is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center pending a bail review hearing.
