ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. — Anne Arundel County Public Schools has announced that the winter athletics season will begin virtually on Monday, December 7.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletics Association (MPSSAA) decided during the fall that a competitive winter athletics season could begin on December 7.

They say that the current COVID case rate in the county exceeds metrics that make it advisable to conduct in-person practices.

“Beginning the season virtually allows our student-athletes to build and enhance the relationships that are so beneficial not just in athletics, but in life,” Superintendent George Arlotto said. “This is not the place any of us want to be, but this is the most prudent way for us to proceed in order to provide opportunities for the children we serve.”

High school athletics teams will utilize the entire 10-week period stipulated by the MPSSAA that runs through February 13, 2021.

If conditions allow for the resumption of in-person athletics, teams will do so following protocols by the Department of Health.
