Bayer will no longer sell its permanent contraceptive device Essure in the United States.

It will stop selling the implant at the end of the year.

The United States is the only country the implant is still sold in.

The move comes amid thousands of reported injuries and safety complaints, along with weak sales.

More than 16,000 women in the U.S. are suing Bayer over the implant.
