MIDDLE RIVER, Md. — A 15-year-old girl in Middle River is recovering after she was shot by a man who was playing with a gun in their apartment building, her father says.

Baltimore County Police say it happened around 4:40 p.m.. in the afternoon in the unit block of Oak Grove Drive. The details on how the shooting happened has yet to be released.

Kenny McKenzie says a 19-year-old in an apartment above his daughter’s room was playing with a gun when it went off. The bullet went through the floor of the apartment, which then struck the 15-year-old in the ankle.

McKenzie says it was one of the scariest situations in his life.

"My daughter start screaming, 'daddy, daddy help me’,” McKenzie said. "It was rough. It was rough."

Ciara McKenzie says she was asleep when it happened. She says it was shocking and she didn’t know what to think.

"I was just scared. I didn’t know what was happening. I was just crying,” she said.

The 15-year-old is doing fine, but the bullet is still in her ankle. Her father says he’ll take her to the hospital to see what their options are to get it taken out.

McKenzie says the shooting could have been deadly if his daughter didn’t move her bed the day before.

“The way the bed would have been, it would have hit her body,” he said. “Ain’t no telling what would have happened then."

He hopes this could be a lesson to anyone who handles a gun to always take extra precautions

"Because this child is 15-years-old and you see what happened,” he said.

McKenzie says the 19-year-old has been taken into police custody, but Baltimore County Police have yet to confirm.
