A man could spend the next 33 years behind bars for killing his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. A jury found Michael Warren Hamilton guilty of second degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon.

Two years ago on Oct. 9, Hamilton stabbed Kevin Maurice Jowers to death. Police found him on the 1700 block of W. North Avenue suffering from stab wounds to the neck, shoulder and back.

Police believe Hamilton killed Jowers because he was spending too much time with Hamilton's girlfriend. Jowers had dated the girl in the past, and the two had been spending more time together. Hamilton didn't like their relationship.

"It is absolutely absurd that a man would lose his life over such a frivolous dispute," said State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. "Senseless violence of this magnitude can no longer be tolerated in this city, which is why we will be seeking the maximum penalty."

Area surveillance cameras showed Hamilton close to the murder area and walking home around the same time. Police found bloody clothing that may have belonged to Jowers at Hamilton's house.

Hamilton will be sentenced Sept. 9, 2016.
