Baltimore police credit AMBER alert for baby's safe return

Posted
An hours long search for a stolen SUV with a baby inside triggered an AMBER alert Wednesday afternoon.

Baltimore Police said the 2009 Suzuki was stolen from the 400 block of Kane Street at about 1:30 p.m. when the child's mother was unloading groceries the vehicle.

Police said a teenager jumped in the vehicle and drove north.

An AMBER alert was initiated at about 3 p.m. Police found the child, Leo Garcia Lopez, tucked into his car seat in the 3900 block of Shannon Drive in northeast Baltimore, a step from Bonnie Russo's door.

"I was just hoping the baby was okay," Russo said.

Though the baby was found unharmed, Russo couldn't escape feeling a connection to the mother. Ironically, she was returning home from having lunch not far from where the car was stolen.

"I just hope and pray that the person who had the baby saw the Halloween decorations and thought there might have been a family here that would have taken care of the baby," said Russo.

At about the same time police were beginning their investigation on Shannon Drive, Lopez's family was getting the news he was okay.

Police credited the AMBER alert for bringing things to a peaceful ending.

Baltimore police do have a suspect in custody after recovering that vehicle. He's described as a juvenile. His identity has not been released.
