A woman was sentenced to eight years in prison for a car crash that killed a young couple on Valentine's Day.
On February 14, 2016 Lauren Scott, 28, was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry in the northbound lane of Solomons Island Road in Edgewater, Maryland when she crossed the center line into the southbound lanes. Scott's vehicle drove head-on into a 2011 Honda Civic, occupied by 21-year-old Daniel Amos and his wife Kayla, 20.
The couple was out celebrating their six month wedding anniversary.
Daniel Amos was pronounced dead at the scene. Kayla Amos was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in grave condition. She was pronounced dead the following morning.
"I believe Dan and Kayla are in Heaven celebrating all the good that God has accomplished through this tragedy," said Kevin Amos, father of Dan Amos. "We really believe, and so did Dan and Kayla, that God doesn't cause these tragedies but, according to scripture, brings about changed hearts and changed lives, for the better, through these painful times."
A toxicology report revealed the presence of cannabis and opiates in Scott's urine sample. Scott told nurses that she had injected heroin the morning of the accident and had not slept prior to the collision.
She plead guilty to two counts of negligent manslaughter. Scott was sentenced to eight years in prison with five years of supervised probation upon release.
