A police-involved shooting occurred in West Baltimore Thursday.
According to Baltimore Police spokesperson, TJ Smith, at approximately 9:30 p.m. officers were traveling in a vehicle in the 2300 block of Winchester Street when they heard gunfire. The four officers were in an unmarked vehicle and plain clothes, wearing police vests.
They drove toward the gunfire. In an apartment complex parking lot, the officers located the suspect who was armed with an AR-15 style rifle. The suspect then opened gunfire on the officers.
The officers returned fire. The suspect was struck and then retreated inside one of the apartment buildings. The suspect suffered at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. He was transported to an area hospital and pronounced deceased. Police have not yet identified the suspect.
No officers or civilians were injured.
Police recovered the weapon and secured the area. The investigation is still ongoing. Police are expected to provide another update Friday.
