BALTIMORE — To close out Valentine's day:
A Baltimore nonprofit called "Love & Cornbread" raised money Wednesday night to continue its mission of feeding folks battling food insecurity.
"We work to end food inequity in Baltimore City," founder Sue May told WMAR.
Important work, which inched closer to its goal Wednesday. Work which started in 2020, when May said she felt isolated and disconnected during the pandemic.
So, she started to spread the love.
"As corny as that may sound- food is the way that I show love," May explained. "And I just decided I was going to make 35 servings of homemade mac and cheese take it out to the corner of Pennsylvania and North avenues, and just give it away."
Nearly three years later, a fundraiser in North Baltimore sold out with dozens attending to support the nonprofit, which serves 20 thousand meals a year.
A team of folks help out, and hand out food on North Avenue every Saturday for the last three years.
"I can say to a person, when I'm standing on the corner, I made that. I can say to the person, I cut those peppers. I can say to the person, I bagged that. And the people are - the love that goes between the two of us, several of us is beautiful," Lamarr Shields, a board member, told WMAR.
On Wednesday night, folks enjoyed a live band, an art auction and food - the same kind the nonprofit serves.
The nonprofit says it believes everyone deserves food made with love. And what better day for the city to show the love than Valentine's Day?
"We're here to show our love of Baltimore," May continued, "we're here to show our love of community, because Love & Cornbread loves Baltimore."
