Giant Food removes pistachios over recall

Giant Food has removed select pistachios from shelves over possible salmonella contamination. The grocery chain issued a statement alerting customers about a voluntary pistachio recall issued Wednesday after a salmonella outbreak was reported at a California farm.

Giant Food says it's removing the following Wonderful Pistachios brand products from shelves:

  • Wonderful Roasted no Salt Pistachios, 16 oz., UPC 1411391006 with best by dates of 2016 OCT 27 and lot codes of 1509123255901;1509123256001 and 1509123255601
  • Wonderful Roasted Shelled Salted Pistachios, 6 oz., UPC 1411373406 with a best by date of 2016 OCT 26 and a lot code of 1509123260401 or a best by date of 2016 NOV 02 and a lot code of 1510123295301

The Landover, Md.-based chain says no illnesses have been reported. Customers should discard the contaminated products, and bring in their purchase receipts for a full refund.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report Wednesday, linking the salmonella outbreak to Paramount Farms, which is owned by Wonderful Pistachios.

The report states that 11 people in nine states have been infected and two people have been hospitalized. Illnesses were reported beginning in December of last year.

Infected products were sold under the brand names Wonderful, Paramount Farms, Trader Joe’s and sold nationwide.
