Things weren’t looking too good for Louis last year.

When the 3-year-old lab shepherd developed a serious eye infection, his owners elected to have his eyes removed rather than treating the issue. He was also struck by a car and broke his leg. Struggling to cope with a blind and injured dog, those same owners abandoned Louis to a shelter, according to a heartbreaking story reported by People.

That’s where California’s Helen Woodward Animal Center stepped in. The nonprofit took Louis out of the shelter and gave him a temporary home at its facility in Rancho Santa Fe.

When the center shared the pup’s story online, the donations and adoption offers flooded in. After careful consideration of the many offers the center got from families wanting to take Louis, he was re-homed with an ideal family for his needs: Marine veteran Steve Walker, his wife Kacey and their daughter, Jordan, who live in San Diego.

Louis and Steve have one major thing in common: Steve is also visually impaired, after a rare eye disease caused him to start losing his sight as a teen. Due to this, the Walkers’ home is already adapted to accommodate those with visual impairment, which should make settling in a little easier for Louis. And the family’s other rescue animals are ready-made friends for the new addition.

“While Louis’ journey with us at the Center comes to an end, his life is full of adventure ahead of him, and we can’t wait to share updates from his family once they settle in with this incredible dog,” the Helen Woodward Animal Center recently shared. “Thanks to supporters like you, Louis will never be failed by people again. Your gifts are providing him and others with vaccinations, medical care, dental work and more.”

According to People, the dog’s touching story resulted in nearly $12,000 in donations to the rescue in a single day.
