A rare April tropical storm has formed over the north Atlantic today. The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Arlene, has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph). The storm is far from land, roughly 815 miles west of the Azores and nearly 1800 miles from the East Coast.

The system is expected to dissipate Friday and no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

Arlene is only the second tropical system in the month of April since weather satellites went into use in 1960. Hurricane season normally runs from June 1st to Nov. 30th, but last year two storms formed before the official start. The first Atlantic storm in 2016 was Hurricane Alex, which made an unseasonable debut in January over the far eastern Atlantic.
