Stats on Hurricane Alex
This is only the second January hurricane on record with the last one occurring in 1938. In 1955, Hurricane Alice came close - but formed in late December.
Sea surface temps are above average but nothing crazy. The storms intensity could be due too colder air aloft, fueling convection over the warm waters. Regardless, it's an awesome/rare storm.
