Polar Vortex
Well...we knew it was coming eventually and it appears some wintry weather is just around the corner for Maryland. Over the last week several models have been indicating that a cold air mass, enhanced by the Polar Vortex, will be arriving to the Mid-Atlantic around December 9th bringing cold and snow.
Did you Say Snow!?
Yup, but nothing crazy. In fact, there's a small chance to see some flakes this week on Sunday night. Otherwise, for Friday, December 9th - the snow potential is there but the likelihood of accumulation is too far away to call. Right now, it doesn't seem to be much more than a rain/snow transition, but as we get closer, temperature profiles of the atmosphere will be more reliable for a snow forecast.
How Cold are We Talking?
"It's been cold before so what makes this different?" This time around, we're expecting daily highs to struggle through the 30s, with morning lows in the low 20s. That's 15° below normal without factoring in the wind chill. Last December for Maryland was one of the warmest on record with 10 days above 60°, which included 70s for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This time around we're expecting it to feel a little more like Winter.
