CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating a deadly crash that claimed the life of a motorcycle passenger in St. Mary's County.

According to state police, local government workers from the St. Mary's County Department of Public Works and Transportation were working to repair potholes Tuesday morning when the driver of a dump truck owned by the department noticed his crew alongside Chappelear Drive in Charlotte Hall. They say in an attempt to turn on Chappelear Drive, the driver drove in reverse and crashed into a motorcycle.

The dump truck driver told police he checked both mirrors before stopping the truck to reverse. Officials say they still do not know why the motorcycle stopped behind the truck before the vehicles collided.

The passenger of the motorcycle, identified as 33-year-old Chrystal Rae Rounds, was sent to University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Charges from the crash are pending the outcome of the investigation and further review by the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney.
