Trees are both the subjects and the prizes in an Arbor Day art contest sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Forest Conservancy District Boards.

The poster competition is open to fifth-graders across Maryland. They're invited to submit by Feb. 26 original works of art with the theme, "Trees are terrific in cities and towns."

Judges will pick winners from each county to compete at the state level.

The top three statewide winners will get tree plantings at their schools: 15 for first place, 10 for second and five for third.

More information is available on the state's website.
