Towson's offense unleashes 14-4 win over UMBC

Posted

Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano contributed a career-high six points to Towson's 14-4 win over UMBC, including a career-high four goals.

Montalbano was one of eight players to score as the Tigers begin the 2016 season 3-0. Towson went into halftime with a 7-2 lead after a free position goal from redshirt junior midfielder Michelle Gildea.

The Tigers opened their second half assault with five goals in just the first nine minutes. Montalbano recorded her first career hat trick at the 28 minute mark.

"We definitely got better tonight and that's the goal, said Towson head coach Sonia LaMonica. "We want to get better each game and we faced a different defensive style tonight. We pushed transition, but still have some things to work on. Kaitlyn had a beast of a game and Emily Gillingham was huge on the draw along with others tonight."

The Tigers have now won five straight against UMBC. Towson's 3-0 start is the best under LaMonica since her 2012 squad did it.

Montalbano's six points were the most by a Tiger since Andi Raymond recorded six against William & Mary last season.

The Tigers face another hometown rival, Loyola Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
