Ravens release veteran returner Devin Hester

Posted

The Ravens released veteran returner Devin Hester Sr. after a crucial mistake in Monday night's 30-23 loss to the New England Patriots.

After the Ravens held Tom Brady and company to a second straight three-and-out to start the game, the Patriots punted to Hester. He had an opportunity to make a fair catch, but he moved out of the way, allowing the ball to roll to the 1-yard line.

From there, the Ravens attempted to run the ball, but Kenneth Dixon was tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Hester has five fumbles (one lost) and averaged just 7.2 per punt return with just two returns over 20 yards.

If no other team picks up the veteran returner, it would be the end of his distinguished career. The four-time Pro Bowler (2006, 2007, 2010, 2014) holds the NFL-record with 20 return touchdowns, including 14 punt return touchdowns.

The Ravens will need to find another returner. They could bring Michael Campanaro up from the practice squad, but no official move has been made.
