COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Michael Locksley is stepping down as head coach of the University of Maryland football program, effective immediately, in a mutual decision Maryland Athletics announced.
The news comes as the Terrapins sit winless in the Big Ten, with a 2-5 overall record. Locksley was 10-21 since the start of 2024, and 39-54 overall in his Maryland tenure.
ESPN reported that Maryland called for a team meeting at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to inform the team of the change.
"Following thoughtful conversations with Coach Locksley, we agreed that a coaching change was in the best interest of Coach Locksley and the Maryland football program,” Director of Athletics Jim Smith said in a statement. “On behalf of the University of Maryland, I want to thank Michael for his dedication to our football program and the genuine care he showed our student-athletes. Michael represented Maryland with pride, strengthened our connection throughout the state and the region, and made a lasting impact on the young men he coached.”
Locksley's contract was up in 2028, per ESPN, meaning he will be owed a buyout of about $10 million.
Assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, who has strong ties to the area, will be named interim coach, sources told ESPN.
“Maryland football and this community mean a great deal to me,” Locksley said in a statement. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this program for so many years, and for the relationships I have built with our players, staff, alumni and supporters.”
